6 Ways to Boost Morale When Your Employees are Working Remotely

Working from home definitely comes with some major benefits

For employees, working from home means avoiding office distractions, cutting out a long commute time, and being able to work in comfy clothes and in a soothing environment. For employers, working from home means cutting costs on office space, office supplies, and office snacks. It also means you can hire the best employees, as location is no longer a factor.

However, with all of the benefits that working from home provides, it also comes with some drawbacks. For example, there are many distractions that come with working from home (ie, children, housemates, pets, TV, etc), and working from home can be very isolating.

This is why it’s important to focus on ways you can boost the morale of employees who are working from home. How do you do this?

Check out this guide to discover the top ways to boost morale when your employees are working from home.

1.Coordinate Virtual Coffee Meetups

When you’re working in an office setting, it’s very easy to build relationships with your co-workers. Employees have the chance to get to know one another during office meetings, lunch breaks, and water cooler talk.

Obviously, when working remotely, such opportunities don’t exist. This is why we suggest coordinating virtual coffee meetups for your employees. These meetups will help your employees get to know one another and make them feel like they’re a part of a team.

2. Be Available

If you have an open-door policy in your physical office, you’re probably wondering how you can extend this policy to your virtual office.

To do this, we suggest offering “drop-in” times on Google Hangout or other platforms. During these times, staff members can come into chat and ask questions. This will help your employees feel secure and like they can trust you.

3. Keep Employees Positive By Scheduling Play Time

As we mentioned earlier, working from home can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. To help keep your employees in an upbeat mood and keep morale high, we suggest scheduling some playtime at least once per week.

Here are some fun things you can do with your employees to blow off steam and stay positive:

  • Host a virtual trivia night
  • Play virtual games such as Scategories
  • Do a virtual photo contest
  • Play icebreaker games so employees can get to know one another better

Giving your employees some time for non-work-related fun will help them return to their jobs with a new sense of motivation.

4. Keep Employees Motivated with Appreciation and Recognition

Motivation is also a key element of company morale. To make sure your remote employees are staying motivated, it’s important that you stay on top of employee recognition and appreciation.

Make sure you give shout-outs to individual employees for a job well done. Additionally, consider implementing an employee recognition program that’s solely for your remote employees. For example, you can have a “remote worker of the month” contest in which the best worker wins a prize and receives a special shout out.

You can also encourage your employees to keep one another motivated by shouting out their most valuable co-worker at the end of each week.

5. Collaborate on Fitness or Personal Goals

Healthy employees are happy employees, which is why it can be a great idea to have your remote employees collaborate on their fitness goals.

For example, you could have everyone join in on a friendly competition to see who can do the most steps per month. Or, if your employees aren’t big into fitness, you can carve out time during the week for them to discuss their personal goals.
